Tertiary Sessions at Twycross Zoo
45 minute Sessions:
- ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR (AQA Psy A, 3.3. OCR Bio 5.9.6)
Why do animals do what they do? This session looks at learning behaviour, methods of
communication, reproductive behaviours and altruism.
- ANIMAL COMMUNICATION (AQA Bio 3.2.8)
How do animals communicate with each other? This session looks at different methods of
communication, the reasons behind communication and language studies.
- EVOLUTION OF BEHAVIOUR (AQA Psy A, 3.3.)
Why does behaviour change over time? This session looks at natural selection, basic
animal behaviour and the evolution of intelligence and brain size.
- EVOLUTION AND SELECTION (AQA Bio 3.4.8. OCR Bio 5.1.5 5.4.5)
How have animals evolved over time? This session looks at the work of Charles Darwin,
his theory of natural selection, examples of directional, stabilising and disruptive
selection and sexual selection.
- CLASSIFICATION (OCR Bio 5.4.5)
How do we make sense of the living world? This session covers the need for classification,
the five kingdoms, classification levels and primate diversity.
- BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION (AQA En Sc 3.1.2. OCR Bio
5.7.5)
Why should we conserve and how do we do it? This session looks at the need for conservation,
specific threats to wildlife, captive breeding programmes and in-situ conservation programmes.
- ANIMAL WELFARE AND ENRICHMENT
How do we care for our animals? In this session we look at the legislation behind modern
animal welfare, the benefits of excellent welfare, approaches to enrichment and specific
examples in different species.
- ANIMAL TRAINING (AQA Psy A, 3.3.)
How and why do we train our animals? Here we look at animal learning and Pavlovian theory
and go on to cover the reasoning and methods behind operant conditioning and positive
reinforcement in a zoo environment.
- CUSTOMER SERVICES (AQA Travel and Tourism)
How do we keep our customers happy? This session covers the need for good customer service, the benefits
of good customer service, customer complaints and monitoring customer service.
- MARKETING AT TWYCROSS ZOO (AQA Travel and Tourism)
How do you market a zoo? This session looks at the need to effective marketing within charities and
specific marketing campaigns.
Workshop Days
- ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR AND COMMUNICATION
Why do animals do what they do? The first session looks at learning behaviour and
methods of communication and the practical task involves students carrying out a
behavioural ethogram. In the second session feedback is provided on the task and
concludes with language studies, reproductive behaviours and altruism.
- CLASSIFICATION, EVOLUTION AND SELECTION
How do we make sense of the living world and how does it change over time? In the
first session we cover the need for classification, the five kingdoms, classification
levels and primate diversity. The practical task asks students to classify animals
around the zoo and then spot key adaptations to particular environments. In the
second session feedback is provided on the task and then goes on to look at the
work of Charles Darwin, his theory of natural selection, examples of directional,
stabilising and disruptive selection and sexual selection.
- EVOLUTION OF BEHAVIOUR
Why does behaviour change over time? This session looks at natural selection,
sexual selection and some basic animal behaviour. The practical task involves
students carrying out a behavioural ethogram and in the feedback session we explore
the evolution of intelligence and brain size.
- BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION
Why should we conserve and how do we do it? The first session looks at the need for
conservation, specific threats to wildlife and captive breeding programmes. The
practical task involves a family tree exercise and then the production of a conservation
action plan for a specific species. In the feedback session the task is discussed and
then goes on to focus on in-situ conservation programmes.
- ANIMAL WELFARE, ENRICHMENT AND TRAINING
How do we care for our animals? In this session we look at the legislation behind
modern animal welfare, the benefits of excellent welfare, approaches to enrichment
and specific examples in different species. In the practical task students are asked
to evaluate specific enclosures. In the feedback session students are asked to present
their findings and then we cover the reasoning and methods behind operant conditioning
and positive reinforcement in a zoo environment.
- TWYCROSS ZOO AS A BUSINESS
How does a charity act as a business? This session looks at Twycross Zoo from a different
angle and focuses on finance, marketing and customer service. The practical task
asks students to come up with a unique marketing plan for an event to be held at
the zoo. In the second session students are asked to present their ideas and feedback
is provided. This session is concluded with a discussion on the charitable work of Twycross Zoo.
- APPLIED SCIENCE - SCIENCE IN THE WORKPLACE
Twycross Zoo – A case study. This session supports the applied science syllabus and
covers the zoo as an organisation, our staff and their job roles, how our staff use science,
health and safety and risk assessments. The practical task asks the students to complete
risk assessments for the zoo site and look at health and safety aspects of the enclosures.
In the second session the students are asked to present their findings and have the change
for a question and answer session. This second session can include a conservation lecture on request.
Before your visit why not download one of our talk templates and
reproduce it for your class to help them take structured notes
throughout the lecture?
