 Shadow a Keeper for the day

Feeding the Giraffes
Would you like to experience being a keeper for the day or would you like to treat someone to this unusual gift? During your day you will experience all aspects of animal care including cleaning, food preparation and feeding. This fun and interesting day includes refreshments, lunch, and a presentation certificate as a memento of your day. You must be 17 years and over to take part in this experience.

What animals will I work with?

As a keeper for the day you will be able to enjoy your day assisting our keepers on:

  • One of our many primate houses (langurs, lemurs, marmosets, woolly monkeys or one of our two mixed houses).
  • The giraffe section, which includes the hoof stock (vicunas, guanacos, camels and tapir). Preparing the food

Although we will make every effort to place you with your choice of animal we cannot guarantee it. During your day you will work with a selection of animals, not just your chosen one.

What will I wear?

Being a keeper can be a messy job and you will be expected to muck in. Please wear suitable old clothes, wellington boots and don’t forget your waterproofs just in case it rains as you might be working outside.

Sweeping upWhat do I need to do on the day?

Please make your way to reception for 8.00am, where you will sign the Health and Safety forms and be taken to your allocated section and introduced to your keeper. Your day will end at 4.30 pm.

  • Participants must be 17 years and over, be quite physically fit because of the nature and demands of the work.
  • If you need personal insurance then please arrange your own insurance for the day.
  • This activity is inside public opening hours. Strict rules apply so that the animals are not disturbed and work is carried out and working procedures are not altered.

Costs

Adult shadow a keeper is £120.00 per person per day. Entrance, morning drink and toast, lunch and drink are included. At the end of your day you will receive a special certificate to verifying that you have completed your keeper for the day tasks at Twycross Zoo.

Junior Shadow a Keeper for the day


Preparing the foodAn ideal experience for children who think they would like to experience being a zoo keeper. During your day you will be able to clean, prepare food, feed and generally care for the animals at Pets at Twycross. It is an interesting day giving children an insight on how to care for domestic pets from around the world. Refreshments, lunch, and a presentation certificate as a memento of your day will be provided.
This experience is suitable for children aged 7 – 16 years old, a parent or guardian must be present at all times during the day. There are only provisions for one adult to be present during the entirety of the keeper experience. The rest of the family are welcome to attend but must understand that they will not be allowed behind the scenes. One adult will be admitted into the zoo free of charge, any additional family members will be charged the normal admission rate.

What animals will I work with?

As a junior keeper for the day you will look after the guinea pigs, rabbits, alpacas, miniature donkeys, tortoise, rats, goats, ferrets and chinchillas.

All feeding sessions must be pre booked. For bookings call 01827 880 250 and ask for animal encounter. Please have your credit card to hand. Zoo entrance fee not included.


 Feed the family of Meerkats and Bat-eared Foxes

Feeding the Meerkats

An unusual feeding experience not to be missed. Are you a dipper or a shaker? Will you dip your hand into the bag of live crickets and pot of live mealworms,Feeding the Bat-Eared Foxes so you can feed the meerkats and bat eared foxes? Or will you shake the bag of live food to these fascinating and curious animals.

Charge £50.00 (for two people)

 Feed the Oriental Small-clawed otters

Feeding the OttersHere you will get the chance to meet and feed our family of energetic otters. Ring the feeding bell and watch the otters come out of their holt, swim across the pool and sit at the edge of the pool waiting to be fed. The otters will squeak when they are waiting for you to throw them their fish and eggs. A truly memorable experience!

Feed the Giraffes

Feeding the Giraffes

This is an opportunity to get up close and personal and feed our two giraffes Keisha and Justin. You will be taken into the VIP area where the keeper will call the giraffes, you will be able to feed them cabbage or lettuce leaves – watch out for their 30 cm tongue!

Charge £50.00 (for three people)

Feed the four female Elephants

Feeding the elephantsJumbo feeding time at Twycross Zoo.! Have you ever hand fed bananas to a 3 tonne elephant, well here is your chance? Our keepers will hand you a large bucket of bananas and ask you to stretch your arm out to hand feed the elephants. Their trunks will then take the bananas from you. When all of the bananas have been eaten the keepers will sprinkle horse and pony nuts on the floor, the elephants trunks will then act like a vacuum cleaner and suck them up, at this time they will ask you to step forward and stroke the trunks. Please feel free to take pictures and ask our keepers any questions.

Adopt an animal

If you’ve enjoyed meeting the animals why not adopt one? Anyone can adopt an animal. All animals at Twycross Zoo are eligible for adoption. You can buy one or several shares in an animal of your choice for a minimum of £40.
