STUDENT WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTS
ANIMAL KEEPING DEPARTMENT
All work experience placements in our Animal Keeping Department are now fully booked until the end of September 2012. We have a limited number of places in October, November and December 2012 and good availability for 2013. Please note, school holidays get booked very quickly and you are more likely to be successful if you can be flexible with dates.
To apply for a placement, please read the following information to determine whether or not you qualify.
Twycross Zoo offers a limited number of work experience placements throughout the year for further/higher education students already at college/university and studying for a qualification in an animal-related subject. Placements are for periods of one, two or three weeks, subject to availability (Monday to Friday only) and all applications should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from your course tutor. In addition, all work experience students must be able to arrange and fund their own accommodation and transport.
We are also able to offer a limited number of one-week block placements for A-level students intending to study veterinary medicine at university. Pre-veterinary students work with our animal keepers learning skills in basic animal husbandry including cleaning and food preparation. They do not have the opportunity to observe veterinary practice.
If you meet the above criteria and would like to be considered for a work experience placement, please email us at workexperience@twycrosszoo.org
VETERINARY DEPARTMENT
Seeing practice is fully booked until September 2012. Places are available after this date.
We have a limited number of placements for students of Veterinary Medicine currently studying at University in their final (clinical) two years. Placements are for a period of two weeks. As we are a Clinical Associate of the School of Veterinary Medicine & Science at the University of Nottingham we do not accept applications from Nottingham students who will rotate through the Zoo in their final year as part of that course.
We are also able to have on site one qualified vet at a time, for a minimum of two weeks. The candidate will take part in all clinical events, attend rounds, journal club and experience the diversity of zoo work. This will count towards RCVS Continuing Professional Development for those with an interest in exotics. This CPD costs £100 per week.
In addition, qualified and trainee veterinary nurses are welcome to apply for a placement working alongside our Vet Nurses.
Seeing veterinary practice includes close contact with zoo animals. Twycross Zoo has a large collection of primates and for their health protection, we need to ensure that people working closely with these species are appropriately vaccinated. To this end, applicants must be vaccinated against Tetanus and Seasonal Flu. All students seeing veterinary practice must also be able to arrange and fund their own accommodation and transport.
