See below for details of Zoo Club summer 2013!
This year Twycross Zoo had 25 children join us for our Summer School - a week full of engaging and exciting activities themed around animals, wildlife, nature and zoos. The children got the chance to join in with various arts and crafts such as clay model animal making and paper making, zoo trails and bug hunting.
They also had the chance to experience what it's like to be a zoo keeper, spending the morning working with our keepers at Pets@Twycross, they learnt how to clean enclosures and some even helped weigh some of the smaller animals!
The children learnt the importance of enrichment for captive animals, and designed some of their own "rats" to place inside the Amur leopard enclosure. Davidoff, being the laid back leopard he is, spent the morning sleeping but did "attack" a few of them later on in the day!
It was an enjoyable week for everyone involved and we look forward to some of the children joining us for our Zoo Club in October half term, and again for our Summer School in 2014!
Just a few quotes from the childrens parents:
"I was pleased by the response and communication about the scheme on enquiry and I liked the structure and balance of different activities you were planning to cover during the week...They (the children) enjoyed being with the leaders and were inspired by the activities and hands on experience they have gained...Thank you very much to all the staff involved in the week."
"Lucy thoroughly enjoyed attending; we booked for one day and ended up coming for 4 days. Thank you for all your hard work."
"He just loved the whole thing and definitely wants to come again"
"She gave the day 2,500 out of 10!!!! Said she'd definitely like to do it again and that it was 'awesome'!"

See below for an idea of the sorts of activities and experiences involved!
Our third year of Zooniversity has been our busiest yet with 23 teenagers taking part. Participants took part in a range of zoo career based activities including animal handling, cleaning enclosures...
Making enrichment, including rat castles and goat shaped pinatas (the rats loved their new toys, but the leopards were a lot more hesitant!) and designed animal enclosures (we were very impressed with them, especially the penguin enclsoure design).
In the middle of the week we headed for the Twycross Zoo Nature Reserve to get hands on with surveying our native species and building a bug hotel to improve the habitat for creepy crawlies...
Towards the end of the week everyone took part in a mini ape behaviour research project, took their final photos for our animal photography competition and learnt how to health check some of our friendlier animals, Nacho one of our bearded dragons is being weighed in the picture below.
We had a fantastic time with some great feedback from participants and parents (see below) and we are already taking contact details if you are interested in taking part in Zooniversity 2014.
"This week has been so much fun and a brilliant experience!"
"This activity [the trail] was really good because you got to know everyone out in your team really well"
