It is with great sadness that Twycross Zoo has said goodbye to their young Asian elephant, Ganesh Vijay aged 18 months.
Ganesh died yesterday due to a heart condition despite all the efforts of the animal and veterinary teams to save his life. Vets from around the country with specialist elephant and equine experience converged at Twycross Zoo in an attempt to keep him alive.
Ganesh was born in August 2009 and had a very rocky start to life when he suffered from a condition usually found in foals and developed epileptic fits aged just 48 hours. At that time the vets and keepers worked around the clock, and with intensive nursing and mothering by the elephant keepers and his mother, Noorjahan, he pulled through following five weeks of uncertainty. At this time, the people who cared for him did not believe he would survive and we at Twycross have been incredibly grateful for the last 18 months we have had with the most delightful, playful little boy who always tried to please.
We will always be grateful to have had this time with him and our heart goes out to Noorjahan. We will miss him.
